Colonels roll past Scots in season-opening victory

DANVILLE, Ky. – Despite a slow start, the ninth-ranked Centre women's soccer squad routed visiting Covenant by a 4-1 margin in the season opener Friday evening at Amend Field.

The Colonels (1-0) featured four different goal scorers and moved their home winning streak up to 22 matches dating back to 2017.

HIGHLIGHTS
- The opening 45 minutes ended in a scoreless stalemate, although Centre out-shot Covenant, 8-2.
- Meghan Paynter finally broke the drought in the 59th minute, slotting a feed from Alana Hughes past the Scots keeper to make it 1-0.
- Covenant would level the score in the 64th minute, but less than two minutes later the Colonels found themselves on top again. Brooke Smithson cleaned up a ball originally deflected by Taylor Gebhart.
- Hughes and Sarah Sirkin would tack on late goals, with Elizabeth Nelson, Smithson and Kennedy Cline earning assists on the insurance scores.
