Austin upsets Centre to open SAA play, 20-13

SHERMAN, Texas. – Centre football dropped its Southern Athletic Association opener Saturday, falling by a 20-13 score against Austin at Jerry Apple Stadium.

The No. 19 Colonels fall to 2-1 (0-1 SAA) with the loss – just their third in the regular season in the past three years. The host 'Roos improve to 2-1 (1-0).

HIGHLIGHTS
- Austin was first on the board, scoring on consecutive possessions in the opening quarter to jump out to a 13-0 lead.
- Centre was forced to punt on its first two possessions, and committed a red zone turnover on the next before a Tanner South 42-yard field goal put the Colonels on the board.
- Cal Lewellyn picked off Austin's Colt Collins on the next drive, returning it 31 yards to set Centre up inside the opponent's 10-yard line.
- Edwards would immediately hit pay dirt on a nine-yard rush to pull the Colonels within 13-10.
- The Colonel offense continued to sputter in the third quarter, crossing midfield just once in the period on a drive that ended on a turnover on downs.
- After holding Austin scoreless for two quarters, the Centre defense surrendered a touchdown pass from Collins with 10:40 left in the game.
- The Colonels reached the Austin four-yard line on the next drive, but settled for a field goal from South to pull within 20-13.
- They would get the ball back with 3:23 left at the Austin 48. Edwards' 24-yard run on 4th and 2 highlighted the drive, but ultimately the 'Roo defense held firm with a game-winning goal line stand.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Edwards ran for a career-high 198 yards on 26 carries, marking the highest rushing total since Colin Burnam went for 204 against Millsaps back in 2017.
- Centre's typically potent passing attack was limited by the Austin defense, as Clark Payne went 9 of 29 for a season-low 101 yards.
- South's 42-yard field goal was a career-long for the senior.
- The Colonels scored on just 2 of 5 zone opportunities, while the 'Roos went 3-for-3.
