BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Centre women's basketball saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Friday evening, falling by a 52-46 score against Birmingham-Southern inside Bill Battle Coliseum.
The Colonels slide to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the host Panthers win their 10th game of the season with a 10-3 (2-0 SAA) record.
Kat Wilson led all players with a season-high 20 points in the loss.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre's offense was sluggish out of the gate, hitting just one field goal while committing seven turnovers in the first quarter.
- The Panthers would take a 13-5 advantage into the second.
- The next frame proved different for the Colonels, who committed no turnovers while trimming the deficit before the half.
- Behind three 3-pointers – including two from Wilson – Centre pulled within 28-22 by the intermission.
- Centre and BSC traded blows throughout the third quarter, and the Colonels pulled within four at 35-31 following a jumper from
Rachel Jennings.
- The Panthers used a late run to take a 45-33 advantage into the fourth quarter.
- Down by 12 to start the period, the Colonels rallied to pull within two possessions after Wilson's traditional 3-point play that made it 49-43.
- The Colonels nearly doubled up the Panthers across the fourth quarter, but BSC would hang on to secure the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Colonels shot just 28% (15-54) overall, going 5 of 17 from beyond the arc. On the other end, BSC was marginally better at 31% (18-50) with a similar 5 of 16 effort from long range.
- Centre out-rebounded the Panthers, 38-36, led by
Ellen Hicks' six boards. It marked the fourth straight game the Colonels have finished with more rebounds than their opponent.
- Wilson, who has scored in double figures in all but one game this year, went 6-for-15 from the field while knocking down a trio of 3-pointers.
