ATLANTA – Centre women's basketball dropped a heartbreaking 81-76 contest in overtime Saturday evening against Rhodes, exiting the Southern Athletic Association Tournament in the semifinals for the second year in a row.
Playing inside Oglethorpe's Dorough Field House, the Colonels (16-11) and Lynx (16-9) combined for seven ties and 10 lead changes. Rhodes overcame a double-figure deficit, however, and took control of the extra session to secure its spot in Sunday's Championship.
Abigail Wehby led Centre with 16 points, while
Madison Marcum followed with 14.
Kat Wilson and
Ellen Hicks also finished in double digits with 14 and 10, respectively.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Despite jumping out to an 8-2 lead, the Colonels trailed 13-10 after one quarter.
- They would bounce back in a big way in the second, outscoring the Lynx 25-14 to carry a lead into the halftime break.
- Marcum scored nine of her 14 during the quarter to spark the rally, while Hicks added six.
- The second half was a battle on both ends of the court, but the Lynx eventually wiped away the deficit and took their first lead since early in the second quarter at the midway point of the fourth.
- Rhodes led 66-64 in the final seconds, but a pair of missed free throws left the door open for Centre.
- Wehby came through in the clutch, banking home a contested game-tying shot near the buzzer to force overtime.
- The overtime period was decided at the free throw line, where Rhodes was able to take 18 attempts. The Lynx hit 13 freebies and one field goal, putting the game away while setting up a title match against Oglethorpe.

Mikayla Fee led Centre with nine boards while Hicks grabbed eight.

- Four players fouled out for the Colonels, who were tagged for a season-high 33 personal fouls. Rhodes would shoot 21 more free throws than Centre.
