Second half rally carries Majors past Colonels

JACKSON, Miss. – Centre women's basketball fell victim to an untimely Millsaps rally Sunday afternoon, ultimately falling by a 64-54 margin inside The Hangar Dome.
 
Trailing by 12 at the half, the Majors (7-0) outscored the Colonels (0-4) 28-12 in the third quarter to turn the tide.
 
Ellen Hicks set a career high with 19 points, adding seven rebounds.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre jumped out to a 13-2 lead, hitting 5 of 6 shots to start the game.
- Hicks converted three buckets and Madison Marcum drained a 3-pointer during the run, with Abigail Wehby assisting three of the early scores.
- The Colonels held the Majors to a 0-for-10 start from the field to the game.
- Payton Herold hit a 3-pointer late in the period to help Centre claim an 18-8 lead after the opening quarter.
- Centre outpaced Millsaps in the second quarter, as well, following a balanced scoring effort. Hicks scored the team's final four points as the Colonels took a 35-23 advantage into the break.
- Millsaps came out of the break on fire, going 11-for-15 from the floor after a 9-for-27 effort in the first two quarters combined.
- The Majors went on a 17-5 run to tie the game at 40-40, eventually gaining a 51-47 edge heading to the fourth.
- Centre struggled to score in the final frame, going 2 of 12 overall and 3 of 8 from the free throw line.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hicks' personal best was five more than her previous high, set last season against Hanover.
- Herold followed with 12 points, as her and Marcum both went 3-for-7 from long range.
- Natalie Duggins matched Hicks with seven rebounds, and Presley Chirico had five.
- Wehby led the Colonels with six assists to go along with six points and two boards. Rachel Jennings had four assists.
 
UP NEXT
Centre returns home next weekend, hosting a two-game set with Birmingham-Southern. The first game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m.
