Pioneers escape Alumni Gym with 62-61 win over Colonels

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's basketball fell in the final seconds to visiting Transylvania Monday evening by a 62-61 final inside Alumni Gymnasium.
 
The Pioneers (1-0) scored on an in-bounds play with 2.7 seconds remaining to defeat the Colonels (0-3) for just the second time in 10 meetings since the 2011-12 season.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Three early 3-pointers from Transy forced a Centre timeout and gave the guests an early 9-2 advantage.
- The Colonels settled in and eventually worked their way back, using a 28-13 stretch to take a 37-31 halftime lead. RJ Smith scored seven during the run while Drew Wilson provided six off the bench. Defensively, Centre held Transy to 5-for-20 shooting while forcing five turnovers.
- Transy came out of the break on a strong note and eventually leveled the score at 42-42 six minutes into the second half.
- Late in the game, with just 1:08 on the clock, Colby Napier hit a 3-pointer to give Transy a 60-55 lead.
- Dustin Gerald and Jalen Williams hit clutch threes of their own on consecutive possessions to give the Colonels a 61-60 advantage.
- On the other end of the court, the Pioneers were able to come away with a clutch offensive rebound following a miss to set up the eventual game-winning play on an in-bounds pass.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Gerald led the Colonels with 15 points – setting a new collegiate high.
- Smith stuffed the box score, as usual, totaling 12 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
- Wilson also finished in double figures with 10 points.
- Transy out-rebounded Centre 47-32, including 18 offensive boards that led to 14 second chance points.

Centre competes in the Webster Classic this upcoming weekend, beginning Friday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. against Westminster (Mo.).
