Centre falls to ninth-ranked Loras in NCAA Sweet 16

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Centre women's soccer saw its 2021 season come to a close Saturday, falling 2-0 on the road at Loras in the NCAA "Sweet 16," played inside the Rock Bowl.
 
The No. 13 Colonels end their campaign 17-2-2 overall, advancing past the opening weekend of the national tournament for the fourth time in program history.
 
The No. 9 Duhawks remain unbeaten, moving to 21-0-1 overall to advance to Sunday's Elite Eight, where they meet UW-La Crosse.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- The host Duhawks were on the attack throughout much of the opening period, out-shooting the Colonels 8-1 while holding a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
- Centre's lone shot came in the fourth minute, as Megan Sidaway got a pass from Taylor Gebhart and tried to beat the keeper near post. Loras' Kyndal Kels came up with the save.
- Jonelle Barron recorded a save at the end of the half to preserve a 0-0 tie through 45 minutes.
- Loras broke through during the opening stages of the second half, as Emily Perhats converted a volley to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
- Centre nearly equalized six minutes later on a shot from Mills Mullen that glanced off a defender and resulted in a corner.
- The Duhawks countered following the set piece. Barron came up with a diving save in the 58th minute, but the home side would capitalize on the ensuing corner kick. Brynn Jacobi converted on a fortunate bounce to double Loras' lead.
- Centre took six shots from that point until the end of the contest – four of which required saves – but could not find the back of the net.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Loras finished with a 14-9 advantage in total shots, although the Colonels wound up with more on target (6-5). Sidaway took two shots to lead Centre individually.
- Barron totaled three saves for the Colonels.
