Long range shooting helps Colonels defeat Piedmont for fourth straight win

ATLANTA – Centre men's basketball knocked down 14 threes as a team Wednesday, defeating Piedmont, 72-69, in the Dorough Field House on the campus of Oglethorpe.
 
The Colonels move to 6-4 overall with their fourth consecutive victory, while the Lions fall to 5-6.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Early 3-pointers from Carter Baughman and Dustin Gerald helped the Colonels grab an 8-2 lead by the first media break.
- Piedmont would use a 19-6 run to gain an advantage midway through the opening period, going 7-for-12 from the floor during the stretch after a 1-for-7 start to the game.
- The Colonels answered, and threes from Jalen Williams and Noah Ring later in the half saw Centre regain a 29-27 lead. A 3-pointer from Baughman in the closing seconds led to a 35-34 halftime advantage.
- The Lions began the second half with a strong surge, but again the Colonels found a response with a 14-7 run – capped by another Baughman three – resulting in a 64-57 advantage with under six minutes remaining.
- Piedmont made one final push, but a late turnaround jumper from Gerald with just eight seconds on the clock helped seal the victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Baughman, Gerald and RJ Smith each led the team with 15 points. Williams also finished in double figures with 11.
- Six Colonels hit at least one 3-pointer, with Baughman (5), Williams (3), Marshall Taylor (2) and Carson Wooldridge (2) connecting on two or more.
- Centre finished with a slight 37-34 rebounding edge, led by Smith's nine boards. Gerald added six, and also had a team-leading six assists.
- The game featured nine ties and 11 lead changes. Both sides led for roughly 16 minutes of game time.
 
UP NEXT
Centre takes on Spalding Thursday at 2 p.m. to finish its stay in Atlanta. The Colonels defeated the Golden Eagles 72-52 in a meeting earlier this season.
