Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The long-awaited opener to the spring football season finally took place Saturday, with Centre shutting out Rhodes, 30-0, at Brentwood High School.
After multiple schedule changes – and a late change in venue to Saturday's contest – the Colonels took the field for the first time in 462 days.
A strong outing from the defense helped Centre start the modified season 1-0 while dropping Rhodes to 0-2.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre's defense put the Colonels on the board late in the first quarter.
Nick Kopp pinned the Lynx at their own one-yard line, and on the ensuing play,
Ty Houck and
Oliver Hunter stopped Christian Willis in the endzone for a safety.
-
Corey Russell took the subsequent kickoff 32 yards, giving Centre positive field position. Just three plays later,
Trentin Dupper connected with
Greer Stone on a 10-yard touchdown pass.
- The Colonel defense wasted little time making another game-changing play, as
Andre Evans forced a fumble that Houck recovered only two plays into Rhodes' next drive.
- With short field once again, Centre's offense would eventually hit paydirt on a six-yard touchdown run from Russell.
-
Oliver Hunter and
Carter Smith combined to sack the Rhodes quarterback on the final play of the second period, ending the Lynx's most productive drive to that point to secure a 16-0 halftime lead.
- Following a fourth-down stop from Centre's defense, Dupper hit
Jordan Gunter on a 10-yard touchdown that made it 23-0 after
Nick Whitlow's PAT.
-
Cole Arendsen capped Centre's scoring on the next Rhodes drive, picking off Jace Franklin and returning it 44 yards to the house.
