Dramatic comeback highlights Centre volleyball doubleheader split at Millsaps

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. – The Centre volleyball team got its second victory of the season as part of a doubleheader against the Millsaps Majors, overcoming a 2-1 match deficit to take the first game in five sets before falling in straight sets in the second game.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

- The Colonels gained control of the opening set with a run of five straight points, featuring a pair of kills from Madison McCabe. They fended off a late Majors rally to take the first set by a score of 25-21.
- In the second set, Millsaps jumped out of the gates with the first seven points of the frame. The Majors led by as many as 11 points at 12-1, but the Colonels fought off seven consecutive set points to make it interesting before Millsaps converted the final point of a 25-22 win.
- The third set saw Millsaps gradually build the lead and keep the Colonels at bay, hitting .458 for the set and eventually winning by a score of 25-16, putting Centre backs to the wall.
- Centre responded in the fourth set, breaking it open with six consecutive points halfway through, including two aces by Abby Woolverton as well as a kill and a block by Shelby Wohlwender. The Majors never threatened and the Colonels pushed the match to the limit with a 25-18 win.
- Millsaps led 9-6 in the fifth set, but the Colonels came through in the clutch with another big run, this time scoring seven straight points as Alice Rodgerson and Katie Hall each had two kills in the rally. The Majors would score the next three to make it 13-12, but after a service error, Hall's ace put the final point on a 15-12 match victory for Centre.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

- Millsaps broke a 17-17 tie in the first set with five straight points to break the set open, eventually winning by a score of 25-18.
- The second set was back and forth until the Majors finally created some momentum halfway through, gradually building a lead and fending off a late Centre rally to take a 25-21 win.
- In the third set, Millsaps grabbed an early eight-point lead and never relinquished it, winning the match with a 25-18 set victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES

- Rodgerson finished two shy of her career high with 21 kills in the first game. McCabe finished with double digit kills in both games.
- Meredith Phillips finished with 66 assists across the two games, including 44 in the marathon first game.
- Centre held a 9-2 advantage in aces in their win in game 1, led by Woolverton with three.
- Madi Barron finished with 40 digs across both games.

Centre volleyball will return to action on Mar. 20 as they hit the halfway point of their season with a doubleheader against the BSC Panthers.
