Errors cost Colonels in losses to no. 20 Vikings

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Centre baseball team wrapped up its series against the no. 20 Berry Vikings on Sunday, losing a pair of error-filled games by scores of 11-7 in seven innings and 9-6.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

- The Colonels got off to their customary hot start in the first inning. Jordan Gunter and Patrick Hope reached base to begin the game and Gunter would eventually score after the first of many errors in the contest. Hope would later score on a sacrifice fly by J. Ross and Centre led 2-0.
- The Berry bats heated up in the innings that followed, scoring nine runs in innings 2-4 on nine hits and three Centre errors.
- In the fourth, Centre chipped away at the lead with a two-out rally as a single by Karson Thompson was sandwiched in between walks from Will Ahrens and Jamie Laframboise to load the bases. Gunter ripped a base hit to left field that scored two runs and cut the deficit to 9-4.
- Centre kept plugging away at the lead in the fifth as Jake Holloway led off with a single and then stole second and third. Ross drove in his second run of the game with an RBI double and then Dillon Di Iorio blasted a two-run homer to narrow the margin to 9-7.
- Berry regained the momentum in the top of the seventh, scoring two more runs following the fifth Centre error of the game to provide the final margin.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

- Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, Centre rallied to tie the score following consecutive singles by Di Iorio, Austin Sharkey and Ahrens.
- The Vikings would score three runs over the next two innings before Centre put together its biggest sustained offensive run of the weekend. Di Iorio walked and Sharkey doubled, putting runners at the corners with one out. Ahrens and Laframboise then doubled to tie the game. Following a base hit from Gunter, Hope's RBI groundout put Centre on top for the first time in the game. Chris Esselman then put Centre up 6-4 with a clutch single.
- Berry would not go away, scoring runs in the next two innings and then loading the bases in the ninth with no outs. One hit and one Centre error later, the Vikings had cleared the bases and gone up by the final 9-6 margin.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES

- Di Iorio's homer in game 1 was his third in as many doubleheader days. He also finished with a team high three hits across the two games.
- There were a combined 33 runners left on base and eight errors - seven by Centre - across today's doubleheader.
