Box Score CONWAY, Ark. – Centre women's basketball bounced back from Friday's defeat to win Saturday at Hendrix, clinching a spot in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament with a 55-54 victory inside Grove Gymnasium.
Ellen Hicks sank a late free throw to help the Colonels (4-6) withstand a late rally from the Warriors (1-11).
Abigail Wehby led Centre with career-high-tying 18 points, four assists and three steals. Hicks recorded a double-double with 10 points and as many rebounds, adding two blocks and a steal.
HIGHLIGHTS
- There was little to separate the two sides throughout the first half, as Centre built a narrow 24-22 lead.
- The Colonels stifled the Warriors' offense across the opening two quarters, holding them to an 8-for-30 (27%) mark overall.
- Threes from
Payton Herold and Wehby, and a traditional 3-point play from
Natalie Duggins, helped the Colonels create some space on the scoreboard heading to the fourth quarter.
- Hendrix didn't go quietly, however, storming back to tie the game at 48-48 midway through the final period.
- With the game tied at 53-53 and the clock winding down, Hicks grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on the put-back attempt. She would sink one of two from the line to secure the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre had 23 bench points compared to 11 from Hendrix. Duggins had nine and Herold had eight to lead the Colonels' reserve players.
- Hendrix shot 35% (20-57) overall while Centre finished at 39% (21-54). Both teams struggled from the free throw line, finishing under 50% for the game.
- The Colonels assisted on 11 of 21 made field goals. Wehby, Herold and
Kylee Murray each has multiple assists.
