ATLANTA – Centre women's tennis opened the 2021 season with a lopsided 9-0 victory Saturday at Oglethorpe.
The Colonels swept through the doubles matches, then won each singles bout to open the campaign with a resounding Southern Athletic Association victory.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Each doubles match went 8-2 in favor of the Colonels. Juniors
Katharine Sherman and
Hannah Doherty paired to defeat Alexis Salgueiro and Kendall Kramer at No. 1 doubles. The sophomore tandem of
Lainey Hill and
Ella Rueff defeated Alyssa Merletti and Sydney Dattilo at No. 2, 8-2, and
Grace Headley and
Caroline Lancaster dropped Lisette Phillips and Brooke Dotson at No. 3.
- Lancaster made quick work of Muskaan Bhukhanwala at No. 6 single, 6-0, 6-0, to put Centre ahead 4-0 overall.
- Doherty officially clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Salgueiro at No. 4 singles.
- Rueff followed soon after with a definitive 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Merletti, and senior
Caroline Stallings delivered a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 against Dattilo.
- On court one, Sherman defeated Phillips, 6-2, 6-3, and Hill rounded out the team sweep with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 comeback win against Kramer at No. 2.
UP NEXT
Centre and Oglethorpe play again Sunday at 1 pm. Saturday's match counts toward the Southern Athletic Association standings while Sunday's is played as a non-conference contest.
