DANVILLE, Ky. – Playing their one and only home game of the modified 2021 spring schedule, the Centre football squad fell 18-17 in overtime against Berry inside Farris Stadium.
The Colonels (1-2) struck first in the extra session, but the Vikings (3-0) answered and converted a two-point play to escape with the win.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Neither offense got much going in the first half as the sides combined for eight punts. Centre's
Nick Whitlow drilled a 40-yard field goal late in the second quarter to make the score to 3-3 at the break.
- The Colonels' first drive of the third quarter proved fruitful, however, as
Trentin Dupper orchestrated a nine-play, 79-yard drive that ended in his 11-yard touchdown run.
- Centre's defense answered the bell after that touchdown, forcing punts on three consecutive Berry possessions.
- The Vikings eventually broke through in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 90-yard drive capped by an impressive pitch-and-catch from Gavin Gray to Cameron Kaway from 15 yards out.
- Berry got the ball back again late in the fourth with a chance to regain the lead, but multiple big plays from
Clayton Bell and the rest of the Colonel defense shut down any scoring opportunities.
- In the first overtime session, Centre's
Patric Edwards delivered perhaps the offensive play of the game on a 25-yard touchdown run amid a host of Berry defenders.
- The Vikings would answer with a touchdown of their own, and opted to go for two in a "win or go home" scenario. Gray found Kawa on a flat route to end the contest in Berry's favor.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Colonels outgained the Vikings 225-130 on the ground as Dupper rushed for 100 yards and Edwards ran for 98.
- Dupper's 100 yards were the most on the ground by a Centre quarterback since Heath Haden rushed for 115 against Rhodes in October 2014.
- Centre's pass rush was outstanding once again as they sacked the quarterback seven times.
Clayton Bell and
Dallas Douglas finished with 2.5 sacks each, while
Andre Evans added two.
- Evans and
Nick German paced the Colonels with nine tackles each.
