CONWAY, Ark. – Centre baseball finished off the 2021 regular season with the first of a four-game set against the Hendrix Warriors. Errors cost the Colonels in both games as they lost by scores of 5-2 and 8-7, with the second coming in walk-off fashion.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Warriors got on the board first in the second inning when an error extended the inning and eventually produced a pair of unearned runs.
- Trailing 3-0, Centre finally dented the scoreboard in the sixth as
Austin Sharkey led off with a base hit and
Will Ahrens ripped a double down the right field line to produce the first run of the contest for the Colonels.
- Hendrix scored runs in each of the next two frames before the Colonels got their best crack at a big inning in the eighth. Once again it was the bottom of the order that produced as Sharkey led off with a walk and Ahrens got on after a Hendrix error.
Jordan Gunter's base hit plated Sharkey for the second time and cut it to 5-2. Centre would eventually load the bases and put the go-ahead run at the plate, but that was as close as they got the rest of the way.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- In the first inning, the error bug that bit the Colonels in game 1 got to the Warriors as Gunter and
Patrick Hope both scored after a pair of Hendrix errors to put Centre up early.
- After Hendrix tied it in the second with a homer, Centre went back on top when Gunter singled, stole two bases and later scored on a base hit by hope.
- The Colonels added some insurance runs in a wild fifth inning, once again aided by Hendrix miscues. Singles by
Jake Holloway and
Chris Esselman gave Centre a 6-2 lead.
- Centre would need those runs as Hendrix quickly responded with four in the fifth, where it would stay until the game, scheduled for seven innings, reached extra innings.
- In the ninth, a double by Holloway put runners on second and third, and then pinch runner
Cole Fergusson scored after an error by the Warriors to give Centre the lead once more.
- Hendrix would get the last laugh, scoring the tying run on an error and walking off with the win three batters later.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORES
