Women’s soccer finds familiar ending amid uncertain spring

DANVILLE, Ky. – A change in seasons couldn't affect the outcome of the Southern Athletic Association Women's Soccer Tournament, as Centre claimed the title for the ninth consecutive season behind a 3-0 victory over Berry Sunday at Andrew P. Amend Field.

The Colonels remain the only team to ever lift the SAA Tournament trophy, even though it took until the spring of 2021 to claim the "2020" crown.

Centre ends the modified spring season 8-1-1 overall while the visiting Vikings go home with a 5-4-1 record.

Megan Sidaway was named Tournament MVP following her hat trick in Sunday's finale, and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Averi Faulk and Kristin Dean.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Berry's Maggie Jones came up with a couple of big saves for the visitors during the early stages of the match.
- Eventually, however, the Colonels broke through on a set piece opportunity. Mills Mullen sent the ball in from a free kick on the right wing and Sidaway channeled it home for her first goal of the afternoon.
- In the second half, Brooke Smithson made a run up the left side and sent a cross in, and again Sidaway found herself on the receiving end. She connected on a header that put Centre up 2-0.
- Centre's third score was another well-executed attack. Sarah Sirkin crossed from the right, Mullen headed the ball down to keep it in play and serve up Sidaway for the hat trick goal.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre out-shot Berry 13-8 overall and 6-3 in shots on goal. Many of the Vikings' attempts came from long distance as Centre's back line took away any chances inside the 18-yard box.
- Sarah Stodghill handled all three shots on goal.
- This was the second all-time meeting between the two sides in the SAA Tournament Championship and first since 2013.
