DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's soccer closed the 2021 spring season with a come-from-behind 3-1 victory Thursday evening at home against Spalding.
Under soggy conditions at Andrew P. Amend Field, the Colonels (5-4) defeated the Golden Eagles (7-4-2) despite trailing at halftime.
Prior to the match, Centre celebrated the careers of seniors
Will Newton and
Brendan Zink.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Trustun Ashburn put the visitors on the board less than five minutes into the contest, slipping past the defense and beating the keeper.
- A host of Colonels put shots on target throughout the first period, but Spalding's Assan Gueye proved equal to the task recording seven saves prior to halftime.
- Centre maintained possession for much of the second half, resulting in a massive differential in scoring opportunities.

Sota Ippongi capitalized on one of those chances, finishing off a precision pass from
Ryan Roussel in the 47th minute.

Nathan Wilcox put the Colonels in front with a headed effort in the 65th minute as Ippongi served up the assist.
- Less than three minutes later, Wilcox scored an insurance goal on a breakaway run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- After giving up the early goal, Centre allowed only one shot attempt for the remainder of the match. The Colonels wound up with a 27-2 advantage in total shots.
- Centre also finished with five corner kicks while Spalding had none.
- Wilcox ends the spring as Centre's leading goal scorer, netting seven with three multi-goal matches.
- Roussel finishes his first season with the Colonels as the team's points leader with 15.
