ATLANTA – After dominating the field in the SAA Championships this past weekend, Centre women's golf was honored with a bevy of year-end awards from the conference.
Rylee Suttor was named Player of the Year,
Margaret Butts earned Newcomer of the Year and
Jane Hopkinson-Wood was voted Coach of the Year by her peers.
Suttor and Butts were joined by
Meaghan Grant and
Bailey Plourde on the All-SAA First Team, and
Abby Ligons earned All-SAA Second Team. With all five starters at the SAA Championships finishing on the All-SAA lists, the Colonels led all programs in total honorees. They also set the program record for most First Team golfers, doubling the previous record of two (accomplished three times).
Suttor is the program's second conference Golfer of the Year and first since Emily Bachert brought home the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference award in 2011-12. In four tournaments this spring, Suttor has finished no worse than tied for third, culminating in her first-place outing at the SAA Championships. Her 229 during the 54-hole event was the program's third-lowest score at a conference championship.
Butts is the third Newcomer of the Year in program history, joining teammate
Bailey Plourde (2017-18) and Alyssa Brown (2011-12). She led all rookies with a third-place finish at the SAA Championships, firing a 239 overall. Butts also had a fifth-place outing at the Golfweek Division III Invitational, and set her collegiate low with a 75 at the MCC Women's Intercollegiate en route to a 12th-place finish.
Hopkinson-Wood is the second in team history to earn conference Coach of the Year after
Bruce Brown garnered the award in 2011-12 and 2012-13. Four of the program's lowest 12 rounds were recorded this spring, including a 297 during round one at the MCC Women's Intercollegiate.
Plourde is one of the most decorated golfers to wear the Gold and White, becoming the third individual to garner three First Team nods during her career (despite no championships being held in 2020) with a fifth-place finish at the SAA Championships. A two-time All-American, Plourde claimed her sixth career victory this spring at the Golfweek DIII Invitational, putting her second all-time in wins. Her 224 in that event was the program's second-lowest 54-hole total, trailing her own 218 scored at the same event in 2019.
Grant tied for eighth at the SAA Championships to become the fourth member of the All-SAA First Team for Centre. She carded her career low with a 75 during the first round of the MCC Women's Intercollegiate earlier this spring, and a set a 54-hole personal best with a 243 at the Golfweek DIII Invitational.
Grant's classmate, Ligons, garnered All-SAA Second Team recognition for her first career award. Her best outing this spring came at the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate, where she finished in a tie for ninth among stiff competition with a 238. She matched her collegiate low of 77 twice this season.
