Colonels drop five-setter at Oglethorpe in extra points

ATLANTA – Centre volleyball continued its long conference road trip with a weekend doubleheader in Georgia, starting with a match at Oglethorpe. The Colonels and Stormy Petrels battled through five grueling sets before Oglethorpe took the match in extra points in the fifth set.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- The opening set was a close one throughout as Centre held the early lead and Oglethorpe battled back at the midway point. Trailing 22-20, Meredith Phillips got a kill on a skip set and then Centre scored the next four points to take a 25-22 win.
- The next two sets belonged to the Petrels. In the second set, Oglethorpe used a big run halfway through to take the lead for good, eventually winning 25-16. The third set saw the Petrels grab the early lead and never look back, holding off a late Centre charge to win 25-19.
- The Colonels felt the heat after falling behind 2-1 and took charge in the fourth set, holding the lead for all but one point of the set. Oglethorpe cut the deficit to 22-21, but Centre rallied with the next three points as Ally Knueven and Isabel Thornton both delivered late kills in a 25-21 win.
- Oglethorpe held the lead for most of the fifth set and took a match point at 14-12. Emily Sullivan came through with a clutch kill to tie the set and force things into extra points. The Colonels fought off the next three match points, but could not get over the hump and Oglethorpe eventually took a 19-17 win to take the match.
