ROME, Ga. – After picking up their first conference tournament win since 2016, the Centre volleyball team faced Birmingham-Southern in the Southern Athletic Association semifinals, where the Colonels lost in four hard-fought sets to wrap up their season with a 19-8 overall record.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The opening set was closely contested the whole way, with Centre holding a slight lead for the majority and going up by four points at 21-17 BSC responded with their biggest rally of the set with five straight points to take the lead, and from there the two teams alternated points until the Panthers won a close one by a score of 25-23.
- The battle continued into the second set as neither team led by more than four. The lead changes and ties kept coming into the late stages until BSC rallied with a 4-0 run to force a set point. The Colonels fought off the first set point, but not the second as BSC won by a score of 25-22.
- Centre played its best in the third set, once again jumping out to the early lead and this time holding on, taking advantage of BSC miscues and pulling away. The Colonels scored the final five points of the set and cruised to a 25-12 victory to keep the match alive.
- In the fourth set it was the Panthers who took the biggest lead midway through as they utilized a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the match at 19-11. Centre staged a furious rally, outscoring BSC 12-4 to tie the score at 23-23, but the Panthers scored the final two points to seal the match with a 25-23 win.
