Colonels fall to Denison on the road

GRANVILLE, Ohio – After traveling out to Covenant last week, the Centre women's tennis (2-1) team hit the road again on Saturday, this time at Denison University. The Colonels came close but couldn't pull out a victory against the Big Red, falling on a final score of 6-3.

The Gold & White's highlights came in the singles matches, Centre splitting the second half of the contest with Denison on Saturday. Hannah Doherty claimed a dominant victory over her singles opponent, finishing her series on a score of 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Maddy Trinh collected another win as an individual for Centre in the No. 5 slot, her series resulting in a 6-2, 6-3 win. Caroline Lancaster was the final win for the Colonels in singles matches, the senior coming from behind in a 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 victory in the final No. 6 spot. All three student-athletes mentioned prior move onto 2-0 in singles in the young season.

Lainey Hill fought a close singles battle in the No. 4 series, but unfortunately could not pull through against her opponent, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 4-10. Katharine Sherman led the team in the No. 1 spot, but fell in a tough 4-6, 2-6 battle. Ella Rueff was the final series, her 5-7, 1-6 result in the No. 2 loss rounded out the singles matches.

The Gold and White were swept by the Big Red in doubles matches, but not without a fight. The No. 1 team of Sherman and Doherty provided a close contest the whole way, eventually falling 8-7 (5). The No. 3 series was the next closest margin of the doubles contests, the final score of 8-5 not falling to Trinh and Lancaster's benefit. Rueff and Hill maintained the No. 2 series in the Saturday contest, falling on a final score of 8-4.

The Centre women's tennis team will get a short break before they get back in action, taking on a Tuesday evening contest in Danville, Ky. For their first home contest of the season. That series against Campbellsville will kick off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22.
