DANVILLE, Ky. - After opening up the season on the road for the first two contests of the spring season, the Centre women's tennis team (2-2) hosted their home-opener on Tuesday night against the visiting Campbellsville Tigers. The Colonels were able to get the lead early, but the Tigers made the back-half comeback and won the match on a final score of 6-3.
The Gold and White were able to get off on a hot start, kicking off the doubles matches with claiming two out of the three as wins.
Katharine Sherman and
Hannah Doherty matched up for duo's second win of the season at the No. 1 slot, claiming the win on a final score of 8-3.
Maddy Trinh and
Caroline Lancaster would hold the widest margin of victory between the two squads though, their No. 3 series ending quickly with an 8-2 final mark.
Lainey Hill and
Ella Rueff were slotted in the No. 2 series of the doubles rounds, but fell a hard-fought contest on a score of 8-4.
The singles matches would not fall in the Colonels' favor, Centre only claiming one of the six matches on the courts. Trinh was the lone student-athlete to win her singles matches, keeping her singles record undefeated in the young season with a quick 6-0, 6-2 final score as the team's No. 4. Sherman held the top spot for the team, getting off to a quick start but eventually falling in the long 6-1, 6-7, 6-10 series. Doherty would meet the same fate in the No. 2 series for Centre, her match resulting in a 6-2, 5-7, 3-10 final score.
Lainey Hill would run as the Colonels' No. 3 student-athlete, her series ending in a 6-0, 6-3 loss. The No. 5 series was controlled by Lancaster, but the senior fell in a tough 7-5, 6-1 series against her Tiger opponent.
Grace Headley made her first singles appearence of the season on Tuesday night, running the No. 6 series for the Gold and White, but was given the short end of the stick in a loss that went to extras. Headley's final score was 6-4, 7-5 (4).
