GREENCASTLE, Ind. – After two tough contests against Campbellsville and Denison within the last eight days, the Centre women's tennis team (3-2) traveled up north to DePauw's home turf on Sunday for a morning contest between the Tigers and Colonels. The Gold and White prevailed in a dominant victory over their northern opponent, the final score falling in Centre's way, 7-2. Sunday's win marks the first time the women's tennis team has beaten DePauw under head coach
Currie Martin's direction.
The battle between the two teams kicked off with close set of doubles matches, all three series having an 8-4 or closer score. The No. 2 slot contained the score that set the condition mentioned previously, the duo of
Lainey Hill and
Ella Rueff working their Tiger foes.
Caroline Lancaster and
Maddy Trinh featured a tighter No. 3 set on Sunday, the duo emerging as the victors on an 8-5 final score. The final doubles series to conclude was in the No. 1 spot, the series going back-and-forth between the Colonels and Tigers the entire way.
Katharine Sherman and
Hannah Doherty represented the Gold and White in the series, but couldn't prevail as DePauw won that set 8-7.
Leading 2-1 after the doubles matches, Centre really were able to accelerate their momentum through the singles sets, winning all but one of the six. Doherty bounced back from a tough doubles loss to put on the most lopsided win out of the singles matches, the result of the No. 2 match being a 6-1, 6-1 win. There were a pair of 6-2, 6-1 final scores that came next in the No. 4 and No. 5 series, the former victor being Hill and the later winner belonging to Trinh. Lancaster was able to build enough momentum with her hot start in the No. 6 slot to carry through the rest of the series, her final score ending on a 6-1, 6-4 score. The final point for the Colonels came from the No. 3 series in the lineup, Rueff with a great back half set with a 6-4, 6-2 final score. Sherman was the final series to conclude against the Tigers, the closest set of the day. In the No. 1 spot, momentum shifted back-and-forth but her Tiger opponent emerged as the winner on a final score of 7-6 (5), 1-6, 8-10.
