DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre men's tennis team (2-3) kicked off some Southern Athletic Association action on Saturday morning, kicking off their first conference game of the season against the Sewanee Tigers. Sewanee was looking to start a win streak and did just that, taking down the Colonels on a final score of 8-1.
The contest was more hard-fought than the lopsided final score shows, the Gold and White only claiming one of the three doubles series after the final serve. The Colonel pair that emerged victorious was in the No. 3 series,
Ashton Whitt and
Faraz Ghamgosar winning the tight series on a final score of 8-5. Although they couldn't come with the win, the No. squad of
Bo Bush and
Jasper Gazzo fought a close series tooth-and-nail, going back-and-forth with their Tiger opponents but falling on a 8-6 final score. The final series was in the No. 2 spot, the team of
Matthew Bulow and
Danny Nelson falling to the Tigers 8-3.
Although Centre wouldn't find a win in the singles matches, the Gold and White were able to force three of the six series into a third set. Gazzo was the top of the three mentioned, his No. 3 match going 2-6, 6-1, 2-6. Whitt was able to start strong in his No. 4 series, but his Tiger opponent was able to make a second-half comeback on a final score of 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-10.
Jett Anderson made another appearance on the court and was the final matchup to force a third set, the final score falling in the Tigers' favor of 7-5, 2-6, 4-10 in the No. 6 spot. Bush was able to grab some momentum in the second set of his No. 1 series, but couldn't pull through on a 6-2, 7-5 loss. Ghamgosar met the same fate, but was able to bring his No. 2 series a little closer on the 6-4, 7-6 (5) score. The final match of the contest was Bulow, his No. 5 series ending in a 6-1, 6-2 loss.
