Colonels sweep Eagles at home

DANVILLE, Ky. – After taking down the DePauw Tiger just days ago, the Centre women's tennis team (4-2) looked to continue their momentum on Tuesday night. Hosting the Asbury Eagles in their first outdoor home match of the season, the Colonels were able to make a perfect sweep against their foe, 9-0.

The Gold and White toyed around with their lineup Tuesday, and the crew they put on the court combined to a working formula. Katharine Sherman and Grace Headley commanded the No. 3 doubles series, sweeping their Eagle opponents 8-0. Although their first time paired this season, the senior duo were 6-2 last season as a squad in doubles matches. Maddy Trinh and Caroline Lancaster continued a dominant season together, moving to 4-1 on the season after an 8-2 victory in the No. 2 slot. The final series to conclude may have been the closest of the three, but Lainey Hill and Hannah Doherty put on an impressive performance in their 8-4 win in the No. 1 series.

The Colonels would continue working through singles, not allowing Asbury to claim a single set on Tuesday night in this portion of the contest. Ella Rueff made her way on the court and made the most of her time, her No. 2 series going a perfect 6-0, 6-0 path to victory. Lancaster was able to make quick work through a strong second set as the team's No. 4, her win coming through a 6-2, 6-0 score. Sophomore Abby Jamison made her first appearance of the season as the team's No. 6 and was able to claim her first win alongside it, putting down her Eagle foe 6-2, 6-1. Sherman stepped onto the No. 1 spot for the fifth time this spring, her strong start in the first set gave her a dominant win of 6-1, 6-2. Junior transfer Mamie Sevier claimed a solid 6-1, 6-3 win on Tuesday night in the No. 5 spot of the lineup, winning her first appearance as a Centre Colonel. The final series was Doherty in the No. 4 spot of the lineup, the senior adding another win to her career total on a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
