NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's tennis took on one of the best teams in NCAA Division III Friday, falling by a 9-0 final to Emory in their first match of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's National Team Indoor Championships.
The Colonels (4-3) claimed five games in doubles action over the Eagles (2-1).
Maddy Trinh and
Caroline Lancaster fell 8-3 in the No. 3 doubles spot to Eliza McPherron and Jessica Fatemi. At No. 1 doubles,
Katharine Sherman and
Hannah Doherty dropped an 8-2 decision against Xuanjin Li and Emma Cartledge.
Emory, which has four nationally-ranked individuals, went on to claim all six singles matches in straight sets, as well.
Sherman got to take on the nation's top-ranked singles player, Eliza McPherron, who won 6-0, 6-2.
At No. 2 singles,
Ella Rueff faced 17th-ranked Christina Watson, falling 6-1, 6-3.
Lainey Hill battled 28th-ranked Ana Cristina Perez at No. 4 singles, dropping a 6-0, 6-2 final.
The other ranked showdown came at No. 6 singles, where Emory's Alexa Goetz won 6-1, 6-0 over Lancaster.
Centre takes on Carnegie Mellon Saturday at 9 a.m. The Tartans fell by a 9-0 score to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday.
