Colonels fall to Garnet in spring break opener

SWARTMORE, Pa. – 14 days since their last contest on the tennis courts, the Centre men's tennis team (3-4) kicked off their first game of five-straight days of contests out west. Taking on the Swarthmore Garnet, the Colonels couldn't muster a victory as they fell on a 9-0 final score.

The Gold and White fell in all three doubles series on Saturday afternoon, the No. 2 series of Bo Bush and Jasper Gazzo falling first on an 8-2 score. Faraz Ghamgosar and Ashton Whitt fell after in the No. 1 match in the lineup, their final scoring resulting in a 8-5 score. The final doubles match was in the No. 3 series and was the closest of the trio, Newcomb Maddux and Danny Nelson falling in the close 8-6 final score.

The singles matches would bode well to the Gold and White's efforts for a comeback, Swarthmore taking all six of the series on Saturday afternoon. Whitt fell in the No. 1 series, his opponent scoring a 6-0, 6-0 score. Emerson Dean appeared in the contest as the team's No. 6 student-athlete, but wasn't victorious as the final score was 6-1, 6-3. Ghamgosar was the third match to finish, Swarthmore taking another point 6-2, 6-1. Matthew Bulow came out as the team's No. 5 student-athlete, coming close in his series but fell on the score of 6-4, 6-3. Jett Anderson opened his day in the No. 4 series of singles, coming close in the first set but soon fell 6-4, 6-0. Gazzo was the final singles match to conclude in the No. 3 spot, falling on a final score of 6-2, 6-2.

The Colonels will spend the next four days out in Virginia, their spring vacation taking on four different opponents within the next seven days. The first on their list is Hampden-Sydney on Sunday, March 20, doubles kicking off at 1 p.m.
