HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – In the second of five-straight days with a contest over Centre's spring break, the Gold and White's men's tennis team (4-5) kicked off the week with a battle against Hampden-Sydney out in Florida on Sunday. After falling yesterday against Swarthmore, the Colonels were able to bounce back with a dominant 7-2 win.
Centre was able to take a commanding start in their win on Sunday, sweeping all three doubles series that took place. Two of the three were close battles, but
Bo Bush and
Jasper Gazzo put together a quick and explosive 8-1 victory over their opponent in the No. 2 series. Both the No. 1 and No. 3 series were able to edge out the win over Hampden-Sydney with duplicate 8-6 final scores, the team of
Faraz Ghamgosar and
Ashton Whitt controlling the former series mentioned and the squad of
Newcomb Maddux and
Danny Nelson paired up once again for the latter series.
The singles matches featured a plethora of points for the Gold and White, earning four in total to their final score. Gazzo built upon his doubles win and carried the momentum in the No. 3 series, sweeping his foe on a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win.
Jett Anderson would come into the contest as the team's No. 4 student-athlete in singles, getting a hot start as well in the 6-0, 6-2 win. Senior
Matthew Bulow would come away with his fourth singles win on Sunday, performing as Centre's No. 5 with a final score of 6-3, 6-2.
Emerson Dean secured the Gold and White's final point as the No. 6 member of lineup for singles, claiming the win in a 6-4, 6-3 score. Ghamgosar fell as the team's No. 1 student-athlete in the singles matching, the final score of 6-1, 6-2 in favor of Hampden-Sydney. Whitt featured the closest match of the six singles series but couldn't come away with the win, the No. 2 slot falling on the score of 6-3, 7-6 (5).
The Colonels will next take on Roanoke in the third of their five-game stint during spring break out in Virginia. That contest will take place on Monday, March 21 in Roanoke, Va., the first doubles serves starting at 3 p.m.
