Women’s tennis land just short of beating Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – 13 days since their last competition from the ITA Indoor Championships, the Centre women's tennis team (4-6) kick off their spring break by traveling to Pennsylvania for a contest against the Garnet. Swarthmore would take down the Colonels in a close contest on Saturday afternoon, falling on a final score of 6-3.

After their last set of games earning them Doubles Team of the Week, Katharine Sherman and Hannah Doherty continued their momentum by claiming another No. 1 series win, their fourth win together on the season. The pair took down a close contest against their Garnet opponent, winning on a score of 8-6. The No. 2 match containing Ella Rueff and Lainey Hill couldn't come up with the win against their foes, falling on a score of 8-4. Caroline Lancaster and Maddy Trinh were the final series to conclude in the doubles matches, the closest No. 3 match being the closest of the three but not falling in the Colonels' favor in a 8-7 (3) score.

Sherman was able to kick off the singles series by earning her a perfect day, Centre's No. 1 student-athlete playing a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win. Lancaster was the final point for the Gold and White on Saturday, winning her series at the No. 6 slot on a final score of 6-3, 6-3. Rueff fought hard against her No. 2 rival, but couldn't reach the win with a 7-5, 6-3 loss. Swarthmore claimed the No. 3 series against Doherty, the final line being a 6-4, 6-1 loss for the Colonels. Hill couldn't muster a victory in the No. 4 series, her line resulting in a 6-3, 6-0 final score. Trinh was the final series in the No. 5 match, the sophomore falling on a 6-2, 6-2 score.

The Colonels will regroup and look towards their next opponent during their three-game stretch in Virginia, the Gold and White next taking on Roanoke. That contest will take place on Monday, March 21 with a 3 p.m. start time.
