Colonels handle Maroons with sweep

SALEM, Va. – After garnering a dominant win the previous day, the Centre men's tennis team (5-5) continued their third match in five days against Roanoke on Monday. The Gold and White blanked the Maroons with a clean sweep, winning on a final score of 9-0.

The emphasis on Centre's dominance on Monday can be found mainly in the doubles category, all three series completing a true sweep in the first half with identical 8-0 victories. Matthew Bulow and Emerson Dean were the first series to complete in the No. 3 slot, followed by the team of Jasper Gazzo and Bo Bush in the No. 1 spot then Ashton Whitt and Faraz Ghamgosar following suit. Bulow and Dean's pairing were the team's second outing together this season, their second win of the season.

Bush head the charge for the singles matches, the team's No. 1 slot in the lineup finishing the day with another sweep of 6-0, 6-0. Danny Nelson took on the No. 4 Maroon but took them down 6-1, 6-1 with ease. Jett Anderson came into the contest and collected his fifth singles win on the season, this time as the team's No. 2 in the 6-3, 6-1 win. Dean was slotted in the No. 3 series on Monday, getting stronger as the series went on in his 6-1, 6-0 victory. Newcomb Maddux continued a perfect singles season with another win to his name, his 6-0, 6-1 win coming in the No. 5 series. The final singles series to conclude was in the No. 6 slot, senior Ian Cowan stepping on the court for the first time this season to perform a stellar 6-3, 6-2 victory.

The Gold and White will have two more away contests and one home match before they head back to classes next week, taking on Randolph-Macon College next. That match is scheduled for Tuesday, March 22 at 4 p.m. in Ashland, Va.
