CLERMONT, Fla. – Centre softball split a pair of hard-fought games Tuesday at the Legends Way Ballfields, continuing their participation in The Spring Games in central Florida.
The Colonels began the day with a 6-2 victory over Miami Hamilton before falling in a close 7-6 contest against Bates.
Sophomores
Kaylen Storms,
Mia Tomillo and
Lucy Baseheart turned in strong outings, especially in Centre's victory over the Harriers to snap an extended losing streak.
GAME ONE: Centre 6, Miami Hamilton 2
- The Colonels got on the board right away in the top of the first, with Storms setting the tone on a leadoff single up the middle. She came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Tomillo.
- After a strong opening inning from Baseheart, the Harriers were able to bring two across on a pair of hits and a Centre error in the second.
- Baseheart settled in following the two-run frame from Miami Hamilton, and went on to allow just four hits – all singles – for the rest of the game.
- The Colonels regained the lead in the top of the fifth, which
Alana Fullen began with a walk and a steal. Storms brought her home with a single up the middle, and eventually scored herself on a two-RBI triple from Tomillo that also plated
Sawyer Lecius. Tomillo would later touch home on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.
- Storms continued her torrid pace in the sixth with a double to right field. She extended Centre's lead to 6-2 on an RBI single from
Brylin Isaacs.
- Baseheart closed the door with a three-up, three-down seventh, completing a fantastic outing in the circle. She scattered six hits, gave up one earned run and struck out seven batters in the victory.
- Storms went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and one RBI, while Tomillo sent 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
GAME TWO: Bates 7, Centre 6
- Bates leapt out to a 4-0 lead after plating runs in the top of the second and third innings.
- The Colonels responded with a big six-spot in the bottom of the third, however, beginning the frame with three straight baserunners. Lecius grounded out to bring
Hailey Watson in to score, and Isaacs followed with a bases-loaded walk to plate
Alana Fullen.
- Tomillo singled in Storms, and three batters later Riley Bentley walked to force home Isaacs and tie the game. Watson drew a hit-by-pitch – her second of the inning – with the bases full to score Tomillo, and
Kaylee Gregory capped the inning after crossing home on a wild pitch.
- The Bobcats chipped away at the deficit until eventually taking the lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI double from Maggie Hillwig.
- Centre loaded the bases to put the winning run in scoring position in the bottom of the inning, but Bates starter Danielle Polirer was able to induce a game-ending flyout.
