LEXINGTON, Va. – The Centre women's tennis team (6-7) competed in their fourth contest in four days on the road on Wednesday, visiting 13th-ranked Washington & Lee in the final road match before their home stand. The Gold and White couldn't pull through with a victory, falling to the Generals on a final score of 8-1.
The Colonels were able to snag a point during the doubles portion of the contest,
Caroline Lancaster and
Maddy Trinh prevailing in the No. 3 slot of the lineup in an 8-4 win. Although the Generals won the other two series, Centre competed in close contests throughout the matches' tenure.
Katharine Sherman and
Hannah Doherty were the No. 1 series for the Colonels, falling on a final score of 8-6.
Ella Rueff and
Lainey Hill was the No. 2 team on the lineup, but couldn't grab the win on an 8-4 score.
The Gold and White couldn't make any comebacks in the singles portion of the contest, the Generals claiming all six points. Lancaster was the closest as the team's No. 6 student-athlete in the lineup, unfortunately falling 6-4, 6-4. Rueff was able to garner some momentum in the second set, but fell on a 6-1, 6-4 final score as the team's No. 2. The No. 3 slot was head by Doherty, losing on a score of 6-2, 6-1. Sherman led Centre as the team's No. 1, but couldn't let the match fall her way on a 6-2, 6-0 loss. The No. 5 series had a 6-1, 6-1 final score, Trinh competing for the Gold and White but unable to garner the win in the series. Hill was placed in the final series, No. 4, falling on a final mark of 6-1, 6-0.
The Colonels will come back to Danville, Ky., for their next four contests, the first of them being against SAA-opponent Sewanee on Saturday, March 26. The doubles matches are scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. on the Centre Tennis Courts.
