Men’s lacrosse’s late push doesn’t pan against Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After ending their spring break trip with a thrilling overtime victory, the Centre men's lacrosse team (5-5, 2-0 SAA) traveled to nearby Transylvania on Wednesday night. The Colonels were able to outscore the Pioneers in the first and final period, but fell in the end on a final score of 12-10.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Gold and White were able to find their offense early, posting four goals compared to the Pioneers' one with five and a half minutes left in the first period. Each goal was pinned by a different student-athlete in that span, including the slam by Ridr Knowlton off a pass from Ethan Hanna.
- Transylvania was able to rattle off a six-goal scoring streak in response, claiming the lead by three with 5:45 left in the second period.
- Davis Wilmes was able to score a pair of goals in less than three minutes to end the second period slightly closer, the Pioneers having a two-goal lead at half.
- Transylvania was able to hold the Gold and White scoreless in the third period, resulting in a four-goal lead heading into the final period.
- Centre wouldn't go down without a fight, Max Speers breaking the fourth-quarter silence between the two teams with a man-up goal assisted by Sammy Zickel.
- Mick Ginnity and Speers were able to score back-to-back goals in less than 30 seconds, closing the Pioneer lead to two goals with 1:16 left in the game.
- Duncan MacDonald would close the game with the final score for the Colonels, his unassisted goal coming in the final 37 seconds of action.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Colonels have continued to collect loose balls, scooping 32 in Wednesday night's contest to make it four-straight contests of 30 or more ground balls in a single game.
- Centre was able to start offensive possessions consistently, their 19 face offs against the Pioneers makes it the seventh time this season the Gold and White have been favorable in that statistical category.
- The Colonels' 22 successful clears marks the highest amount in a single game so far this season, compiling a 91-percent clear percentage in the last five games (92 for 101).
- Speers' four points totals a career-high for the Brentwood, Tenn., native, his hat trick of three goals also marking a new milestone in a single contest.

UP NEXT
Centre will look to regroup as they approach the home stretch of the regular season, their final four games all being inner-SAA matchups. Their first stop will be a trip down to Atlanta, Ga., on Saturday, April 2, the first face-off taking place at 1 p.m. against Oglethorpe.
