NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – Among some of the top teams in Division III, the Centre women's tennis team (4-4) took on the Carnegie Mellon Tartans on Saturday morning at the ITA Indoor National Championships. Their second match at Top Seed Tennis didn't fall in their favor, the Tartans besting the Colonels on a final score of 7-2.
Although Carnegie Mellon won two out of the three doubles series, the Gold and White were able to snag a thrilling victory on the No. 1 slot in the lineup on a score of 8-6. The winning duo consisted of Sherman and Doherty, beating out the fifth-ranked doubles team in Division III. The other two doubles series had similar scores of 8-2, in favor of the Tartans, the tag team of
Ella Rueff and
Lainey Hill commanded the No. 2 series while the No. 3 team of
Maddy Trinh and
Caroline Lancaster rounded out the Colonels' doubles lineup.
Centre couldn't find their rhythm on the singles matches, but still put up a good fight in a handful of series. Doherty's hot start resulted in not only the lone singles series to force a third set, but a final score resulting in a 6-3, 1-6, 10-7 win at the No., 3 slot in the lineup. Hill was the closest two-set match of the morning, her No. 4 spot resulting in a 6-3, 6-3 loss. Sherman's foe found some momentum going into the second set, taking over the Gold and White in the No. 1 series 6-3, 6-1. Rueff's No. 2 matchup bested her on a final score of 6-1, 6-0, Trinh (No. 5) and Lancaster (No. 6) having identical scores in their respected losses, 6-0, 6-0.
The Colonels will have one more shot to come out of the 2022 ITA Indoor National Championships on Sunday, playing in the 8 a.m. morning match for an early start to their day. They'll take on Kenyon College in the Top Seed Tennis Center in Nicholasville, Ky.
