NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The Centre women's tennis team (4-5) concluded the 2022 ITA Indoor National Championships on Sunday, taking on the Kenyon Lords to kick off the day. The Colonels couldn't reach the win, falling on a final score of 5-1.
Kenyon was able to fight through Centre in the doubles series, sweeping all three matches. Two of the three contests were decided by two or less points, Centre's early leads in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots gave the Lords a run for their money.
Maddy Trinh and
Caroline Lancaster had the closest of the three series in the No. 3 spot, the team falling on a score of 8-7. The No. 2 series was just behind them on an 8-6 score, in favor of Kenyon,
Ella Rueff and Lainey giving their best fight this weekend at the ITA Championships. The final series was
Katharine Sherman and
Hannah Doherty in the No. 1 match, the team rounding out the doubles portion of the contest on an 8-1 loss.
To save time and have the second round of matches kick off as soon as possible at Top Seed Tennis, so three of the six matches were left unfinished once Kenyon clinched. The Gold and White saw many bright spots throughout the singles lineup, Lancaster claimed her fifth singles win of the season on a dominant 6-1, 6-3 final score in the No. 6 series. Out of the three unfinished matches, two of them featured Centre leads or Colonels that had won a set prior to the early end. Doherty had the hot-hand in the No. 3 series on Sunday morning, the Brookhaven, Ga. native controlling a 6-4, 4-3 lead. Sherman was in a back-and-forth battle with her No. 1 opponent, her early lead of 6-4, 1-6 halted as soon as the third set was about to start.
Maddy Trinh was the final series to leave without a decided winner, her No. 5 match finished on a 2-6, 4-5 final score. The final two series resulted in Centre losses,
Ella Rueff in the No., 2 slot finished on a 6-2, 6-1 score and No. 4
Lainey Hill ended on a 6-3, 6-4 total.
The Colonels will have a break after a long and tough three days, next scheduled to take on Hanover on Saturday, March 12. That contest is scheduled to take place in Danville, Ky. at home, the time currently to be announced. Stay up-to-date with all things Centre Colonels at
