Centre shuts down Majors in outdoor matchup

DANVILLE, Ky. – In the first home contest of two this weekend, the Centre women's tennis team (8-8, 1-1 SAA) looked to take down the Millsaps Majors on Saturday afternoon in the beautiful outdoor tennis courts. The Colonels prevailed and emerged as the victors on the day, taking down their SAA opponent on a final score of 7-2.

The Gold and White were able to garner momentum after the doubles matches, claiming two wins versus the Majors' one. The region's seventh-ranked doubles team of Katharine Sherman and Hannah Doherty put on the largest margin of victory between the three matches at the No. 1 series, sliding into victory on an 8-3 final score. Maddy Trinh and Caroline Lancaster was the other duo to find a point for Centre in Saturday's contest, taking down their foe in the No. 3 series on a score of 8-6. The final series to compete was on No. 2's court, the team of Ella Rueff and Lainey Hill fighting a tough battle that couldn't fall in their favor, 8-6.

The singles matches continued to garner points for the Gold and White, Centre taking all but one in the second series of matches on Saturday afternoon. Rueff bounced back with the most dominant score out of the six matches, her No. 2 series landing on a final score of 6-0, 6-1. Sherman's consistency proved well through the start to the finish on Saturday, her 6-3, 6-3 win collecting another point for the Colonels as the No. 1 series. Despite a close first set, Lainey Hill at the No. 4 position brought together a dominant second set, claiming a win on the 7-5, 6-2 final score. Lancaster's hot start gave her enough momentum to close the match out strong, her matchup at the No. 5 series resulting in a 6-3, 7-5 win. Doherty's No. 3 series was forced to a third set, the senior's experience working well in a long 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) victory. Grace Headley's series didn't work in the Colonels' favor in the No. 6 match, her long three-set run ending with a 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 loss.

The Colonels will have one more home contest before taking road trips the rest of the regular season, their Senior Day celebration with Birmingham-Southern will be taking place after the men's contest (starting at 11 a.m.) and before the women's matches are scheduled to kick off at approximately 2 p.m. Both contests for the men and the women will be on the outdoor courts.
