Softball blanks Sewanee but fall to Millsaps in SAA Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After falling to top-seed Birmingham-Southern on Friday, the Centre softball team (11-30, 4-14 SAA) were placed in a win-or-go-home situation on Saturday at the 2022 Southern Athletic Association Tournament. The Colonels would shut out sixth-seed Sewanee on a final score of 4-0 to advance to the next round but would end their season with a nail-biter to third-seed Millsaps on a 5-4 score.

GAME ONE: Centre 4, Sewanee 0
- The Gold and White were the first to strike, senior Alana Fullen sliding a pitch to left field to bring home Sam Rogers from third base.
Lucy Baseheart would have another great outing in four innings on the mound for the Colonels, only allowing one hit and one walk in the 14 Tiger batters faced.
- The bats ran hot later in the fifth, three more runs coming in by way of an eight-batter inning.
- After Kaylen Storms and Fullen made their way on base to lead off the inning, designated player Abby Duncan slapped a hit up the middle of the field to drive in both Storms and Fullen.
- After advancing to third base later, Kaylee Gregory would send a ball to the outfield for a sacrifice fly to add to their lead.
- The Tigers would get close to getting on the board in the final inning with the bases loaded, but a line drive to Rylie Bentley would garner an unassisted double-play with putting a foot on second base to end the game.

GAME TWO: Millsaps 5, Centre 4
- Millsaps would mark the board first, their first inning of play driving in an unearned run.
- The Gold and White would strike back and take the lead in the second inning, a double by Rogers out in left field tossing home Riley McCue and Gregory to make the score 2-1.
Sawyer Lecius would add to the lead in the third inning, sending a 2-base hit down the right field line to send Storms across home from second base.
- Baseheart was able to hold strong in the final two innings pitched, facing only six batters before leaving after the fifth inning, striking out two.
- Millsaps would come knocking in the sixth inning, tying the game with a two-RBI double and another pair later in the inning.
- The Colonels would try their hand at the comeback with putting up a score in the sixth inning, Gregory finding her way around the bases after McCue sent a single straight-out to center field.
