MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Entering the 2022 Southern Athletic Association Championship Tournament as the fourth seed, the Centre women's tennis team (12-10, 5-3 SAA) took on fifth-seeded Millsaps in the SAA Quarterfinal match on Friday afternoon. The Colonels were able to repeat the same success they had against Millsaps in the regular season, taking them down on a final score of 5-0 to advance to the SAA semifinal on Saturday.
The Colonels kicked off their sweep in the SAA Quarterfinal with a perfect record in the doubles series, the furthest margin in scoring was an 8-6 mark. The three tight contests ended first with
Caroline Lancaster and
Maddy Trinh as the team's No. 3, nailing that 8-6 score. The No. 2 series' score was the exact same, commanded by
Lainey Hill and
Ella Rueff to finish third out of the three series. The top of the lineup for the Gold and White battled a tough contest with their Majors opponent,
Katharine Sherman and
Hannah Doherty emerging on top with an 8-7 final mark.
Needing only two points to clinch the victory heading into singles, the Colonels would do just that by winning the first two finishing singles contests. Trinh had the most dominant performance as the team's No. 5, the sophomore posting a 6-1, 6-1 final score. The final point Centre claimed on the day stemmed from the No. 2 spot of the lineup, Rueff slamming down a 6-4, 6-3 score to advance the Gold and White to the SAA semifinal. The unfinished series included No. 4 Hill (6-3, 6-2), No. 6 Lancaster (6-4, 2-3), No. 1 Sherman (6-2, 3-6) and No. 3 Doherty (5-7, 2-5).
The Colonels will await their next opponent in the SAA semifinal match on Saturday, April 30. Centre will continue playing in Murfreesboro, Tenn., the first doubles serves kicking off at 3 p.m. ET.
