Colonels upset Stormy Petrels to advance to SAA final

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Taking down the sixth-seeded Majors on a sweep, the No. 3 seed Centre men's tennis team (14-6, 5-2 SAA) awaited a rematch with the SAA's No. 2 seed, Oglethorpe, in the 2022 Southern Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship Tournament semifinal on Saturday morning. After falling in their regular season meetup, the Colonels found revenge in a tight 5-3 victory to advance to the SAA championship on Sunday, May 1.

The Gold and White were able to get the head start after the doubles series, taking a quick lead by winning two of the three doubles series. The first series to conclude though was not in the Colonels' favor, Oglethorpe besting the No. 1 team of Faraz Ghamgosar and Ashton Whitt on a score of 8-3. Centre's run kicked off at the No. 3 series of the lineup, their first point as a team coming from a dominant 8-4 victory by Danny Nelson and Newcomb Maddux. The senior duo have now collected eight wins in their 2022 campaign, the seventh-straight. Bo Bush and Jasper Gazzo would fight a tight contest against the Oglethorpe foe at the No. 2 spot of the lineup, but emerging on top in a 8-6 victory to give the Colonels the lead heading into singles.

Ghamgosar was able to keep the team's momentum going to start the singles series, putting on one of his most dominant performances of the season with a quick 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 spot. Oglethorpe was able to climb back into the mix to tie the match with two-consecutive wins, Gazzo (No. 4; 6-4, 6-2) and Whitt (No. 2; 1-6, 6-2, 6-2) both falling to their Stormy Petrel foes. Bush was able to push a solid final set to put the Gold and White one point away from reaching the SAA title match, winning a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 exchange of blows out in the No. 3 series. Matthew Bulow's entrance to the contest as the teams' No. 6 spot of the lineup battled a Stormy Petrel who was already fatigued from doubles, the senior's fresh legs sealing the team's advancement to the title match for a second year in a row on a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3 victory. Jett Anderson's series at the No. 5 was the only one left unfinished, that score being 6-4, 3-6.

The Colonels will have one more match before they can become the conference champions, taking on the winner between No. 1 seed Sewanee and No. 4 seed Birmingham-Southern. That contest will take place on Sunday, May 1, the doubles portion kicking off at 11 a.m. ET.
