MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – Centre volleyball battled down to the wire in the Southern Athletic Association semifinals against the Sewanee Tigers. The two teams alternated set wins until the Tigers got the win in the fifth set.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- In the opening set the Tigers used an 11-1 run to break a 9-9 tie and never looked back as they won 25-17.
- The Colonels bounced back in the second set. Two separate runs of five straight points were the difference as Centre hit over .300 and
Syd Bietz put home the last three kills in a 25-15 win.
- The third set was the closest one of the match as Centre overcame an early 13-5 deficit to take the lead at 21-18 on a kill by
Emily Sullivan. Sewanee battled back to take the lead at 23-22 and while Centre tied it back on a kill from
Emily Gardner, the Tigers scored the next two to push the Colonels to the brink at 25-23.
- Trailing 12-10 in the fourth set, the Colonels scored 12 of the next 14 points to take control as
Madi Winfield had three aces during that stretch.
Emily Goddin scored the last two points of the 25-16 win with a block and a kill to force the match to the limit.
- The Tigers caught fire in the fifth set as they used a 10-1 run to turn a 5-1 deficit into an 11-6 lead. Centre cut the deficit to two on two separate occasions, but that was as close as they got as Sewanee won 15-11.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Bietz and Sullivan paced the Colonels with a dozen kills each, followed by Goddin with 11.
- Gardner led all players with 40 assists.

Madi Barron led the Colonels with 17 digs, with Gardner and Winfield adding a respective 15 and 13.
