Colonels cruise past Golden Eagles

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Following the Thanksgiving break, Centre women's basketball returned to action. Traveling to Louisville, the Colonels' quick start downed the Spalding Golden Eagles by a score of 86-53, improving to a 6-0 overall record. 
 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 
- Centre controlled the game from the beginning. Emma Rose Vincent initiated the scoring with a jumper, simultaneously opening an 8-0 scoring run. By the first quarter's media time out, the Colonels possessed an 11-point edge over the Golden Eagles. Out of the break, Lilly Reid, Makya Grinter, and Emma Perna ignited, tacking on 12 additional points by quarter end. Entering the second quarter, the score read Centre 27, Spalding 12. 
- The Golden Eagles opened the next period with an easy jumper in the paint, but Bailey Rucker responded with a layup immediately followed by a three. The Golden Eagles began to chip away at the Colonels' hold, cutting their score deficit to ten by the media timeout. Leading 36-26 with four minutes to go, the Colonels closed the first half with a 13-4 scoring streak, bringing the halftime score to 49-32, Centre favoring. 
- Out of the half, Grinter struck hot with seven consecutive points to open the period. Katelyn Stiltner further stretched Centre's hold with a pair of free throws just after. With less than four minutes left in the quarter, Spalding finally broke their scoring drought. Holding the Golden Eagles to just six points in the period, Centre stretched their lead to 27 points entering quarter four. 
- The final period started with both squads trading points. Grinter eventually broke the pattern with a basket from long range and just after, the Golden Eagles fell silent for more than four minutes. In the meantime, Centre's freshman ignited. Charley Harper, Arin Nipp, Sophia Richardson, and Reid tallied 13 points together that would close the final score at Centre 86, Spalding 53. 
 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- Grinter led all players with 17 points. The Colonels had three other athletes with double figured points: Reid (13), Rucker (12), and Jessie (10).
- The Colonels more than doubled Spalding in rebounds, taking 41 to their 20.  Natalie Duggins, Nipp, and Jessie tied for the game's leader in rebounds with four each. 
- Centre shot 69 percent from the charity line, going 13-19. 
- From long range, the Gold & White shot 53 percent (9-17) while Spalding went 5-15.

Centre women's basketball will continue their road series, traveling south for their next contest. Taking on the Sewanee Tigers, Centre women's basketball will open their conference season on Saturday, Dec. 2nd, at 2 p.m. ET.
