Men’s soccer fights to very end in SAA Tournament setback

ATLANTA – Centre men's soccer fought to the very end in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Rhodes in the 2023 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament semifinal match.  

The Colonels finished the season with an 8-7-3 overall record and a 3-1-3 SAA tally. The Gold & White posted a six-win improvement over last season and earned an SAA Tournament win in the quarterfinal match. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS  
- Both squads played a defensive heavy first half. Centre and the Lynx were even in corners in the first half with two each. The Colonels did not take any shots in the first frame and held Rhodes to just three with Jacob Camacho stopping the only one on target. 
- The Centre offense saw a much stronger second half with three shots coming off Colonel feet. 
- With just two minutes left in the match it looked like the contest was going to overtime. Unfortunately for the Gold & White, the Lynx scored the lone goal of the match at 88:41. 
- Matthew Seran got one final shot off for Centre with 19 seconds left in the tournament battle. His shot was on frame and headed to the bottom right of the goal before it was stopped by the opposition's keeper. 
- The no. 2 seeded Rhodes won 1-0 over the no. 3 seed Colonels.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE  
- Everett Hauser, AJ Daniels, and Matthew Seran each tallied one shot for the Gold & White. The shots from Daniels and Seran were on frame.  
- Centre goalkeeper Jacob Camacho played all 90 minutes and stopped three shots.  
- A total of eight Colonels played all 90 minutes. Camacho, Hauser, Daniels, Sota Ippongi, Alec McAlister, Eumir Rodriguez, Taylor Nelson, and Finnegan Deem-Ranzetta were on the pitch for the duration of the matchup 

WRAPPING UP 
John Palomino finishes the leading scorer for the Colonels with five goals. He also lead the team in assists with four. Drew Davidson took the most shots on frame across the season with 19 total. Jacob Camacho led the goalkeeping effort with 40 saves over 15 games and six wins.
