ATLANTA- Centre women's basketball returned to play on Saturday, facing Washington & Lee for their first of two games in the Oglethorpe Classic. Leading for much of the game, the Generals broke the Colonels seven game winning streak.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The game started at a competitive pace. Centre's Emma Rose Vincent opened the scoring, but Washington & Lee (W&L) quickly answered in the following possessions. The Colonels fell silent midway through the period, offering the lead to the Generals. Later baskets from both Makya Grinter and Bailey Rucker eventually re-tied the game but an 8-0 run from W&L closed the first quarter's score at 21-12.
- Lilly Reid carried much of the second period's scoring for the Colonels, opening with a three, adding seven additional points later. The Generals maintained their lead for the remainder of the period, closing the first half's score at 38-29.
- Out of the break, the Colonels began to chip away at the General's hold, reducing the lead to as little as six. Mid-way through the third, W&L opened a 15-5 scoring run to give them their largest lead yet entering the final period.
- Heading into the final quarter, the Generals continued to control the game's pace. Mid-way through, Natalie Duggins kick started a run to narrow the scoring deficit but at game's end, the final score read 76-62, the Generals favoring.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Reid fronted the Colonels in points with a career high of 23. The rookie added one steal, one rebound, and an assist. Centre also got double figured points from Rucker with 14.
- The General's just edged Centre out in rebounds, taking 47 to the Colonels' 41. Duggins led Centre in rebounds with eight.
- The Gold & White shot 81 percent from the charity line after going 13-16. The Generals shot 64 percent (16-25).
- Vincent led the game in steals with three while Anna Thomas followed just after with two.
