Softball opens spring season against Asbury, Wooster

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre softball team (0-2) opened up the 2023 spring season on Saturday, hosting Asbury and Wooster for a series of three games on the Centre Softball Field. The Colonels couldn't pull out a victory on opening day, falling to Asbury 1-0 and Wooster 6-0.
 
GAME ONE: Asbury 1, Centre 0
- Centre was able to put on a runner first, Rylie Bentley earning the walk on her first at-bat of the season.
- The Gold & White would have student-athletes appear on base in the bottom of the third inning, freshman Izzy Rushing taking a single to center field before advancing to second base off of Layne Ogle's hit to the third basemen in her single.
- Before Lucy Baseheart would retire after the bottom of the fourth, the junior only allowed one hit in 14 batters faced across four innings.
- After the Eagles led the fifth inning off in a single, they'd bring the game's lone run home off a series of ground outs to claim the lead.
- Freshman Tori Candler would give the Colonels' their closest shot after to tie the game up in the bottom of the sixth, sending a beautiful hit out to right-center field for an extra base. 

GAME TWO: Wooster 6, Centre 0
- Kaylee Gregory was able to put the Fighting Scots on their toes early, pushing a double off the right side in her first at-bat in the bottom of the second inning.
- After giving up a walk, Wooster would drive home a runner off the double to take the lead in the top of the third.
- Wooster's biggest inning would lie in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs in quick succession, the game's final runs of the evening.
- Centre would earn a spark at the bottom of the sixth inning, Cheney Floyd and Candler both popping singles for a pair of hits. 

UP NEXT
The Colonels will look to bounce back tomorrow, taking on the two teams again on Sunday, Feb. 12. The first of the two games will be against Wooster at 10 a.m. ET, the second against Asbury kicking off around 2 p.m.
