Women’s tennis opens season against Campbellsville

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre women's tennis team (0-1) kicked off their 2023 season on Saturday afternoon against an inner-state opponent, taking on Campbellsville for the season opener. The Colonels had a majority of matches go to extras or a third set, but couldn't come with the team victory on a final score of 8-1.

The Gold & White put together three new doubles teams compared to last season, senior Lainey Hill and freshman Carlie Mitchell teaming up in the no. 1 spot of the lineup for an incredibly close 8-7 (7-4) loss. The closest doubles match of the three had a final score of 8-7 (8-6), the duo of Maddy Trinh and Kayla Harger pushing their Tiger opponent to the limit despite the eventual loss. Ella Rueff and Grace Williams were the final duo to close out the doubles round of competition, a battle tooth-and-nail with a final score of 8-6 that would fall in Campbellsville's favor.

The singles matches were just as competitive, three of the six series going on having a third set between them. Trinh would overcome her Tiger opponent in the final set for Centre's point at the no. 5 slot, having a strong comeback 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9). Lainey Will would have a similar series as the Gold & White's no. 3, the senior pushing a tight 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) series that went the way of the Tigers in the end. Williams held the final extra-set series for the Colonels in Saturday's contest, getting a hot start but falling short of victory on a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) final score. Mamie Sevier held the final slot in Centre's singles lineup, falling on a score of 6-4, 6-2. Mitchell held the no. 2 spot of the lineup, the freshman falling on a 6-0, 6-4 final score. The last series of the night was on the top spot of the lineup, Rueff losing on a score of 6-0, 6-0.

The Colonels will look to build off the positives from their close Saturday match into Sunday, where the team takes on inner-state opponent Georgetown tomorrow, Feb. 12. The teams will once again compete in the Seabury Tennis Center, the first serve being at 1 p.m. ET.
