Women’s tennis celebrates first win of 2023

DANVILLE, Ky. – After facing off against a tough inner-state opponent on Saturday, the Centre women's tennis team (1-1) battled it out against another inner-state opponent in Georgetown College on Sunday. The Colonels bested the Tigers in a tough and tight contest, head coach Morgan Cook earning her first collegiate win in the 5-4 team victory.

The teams kicked off the contest on doubles, the Gold & White taking two of the three matches in their favor. Lainey Hill and Carlie Mitchell had the most dominant win of the afternoon, the no. 1 team in the lineup earning an 8-2 win. The no. 3 duo was the other doubles team to come away with a victory, the 8-4 Centre win stemmed from Maddy Trinh and Kayla Harger. The final doubles match belonged to Ella Rueff and Grace Williams, although not claiming the win the team had a tough fight in the no. 2 slot in the 8-4 loss.

The singles matches were a back-and-forth battle, the teams splitting an even three and three between them. Trinh had the most dominant victory of the night, her no. 5 spot of the lineup resulting in a 6-0, 6-0 victory. The no. 3 spot was just as close to dominant, Lainey Hill commanding the match to claim a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Freshman Carlie Mitchell was able to amass a comeback after falling in the first set, but the extras the no. 2 Colonel forced didn't fall her way in the 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) result. Williams also competed in a set with extras, her no. 4 duel also couldn't reach the victory in the 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) final score. Rueff was in the no. 1 spot of the lineup, falling 6-1, 6-0 on Sunday.

With the score at an even four to four, the result between Mamie Sevier and her no. 6 opponent would determine the final team score. After the two fought tooth-and-nail in the first set, the senior dominated the extras and didn't look back on her way to victory in the 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 final score.

The Colonels will regroup quickly before their next contest, taking on Midway for a Wednesday-night showdown on Feb. 15. The first serves will kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET.
