Cook hits first collegiate coaching win streak

DANVILLE, Ky. – After taking down Georgetown last weekend in a thrilling 5-4 victory, the Centre women's tennis team (2-1) hosted Midway (0-2) in the Seabury Family Tennis Center for a Wednesday-night showdown. Head coach Morgan Cook would earn her first win streak as a collegiate head coach after the result of the match, the Colonels taking down the Eagles on a final score of 6-3.

The doubles portion resulted in favor of the Gold & White, winning two of the three matches to take an early lead. Maddy Trinh and Kayla Harger dominated their opponent on a perfect score, shutting out the Eagles no. 3 doubles team on an 8-0 final score to kick off the night. The Colonels' no. 2 team wasn't too far behind in their victory, winning a lopsided 8-3 win by senior Ella Rueff and freshman Grace Williams. The final series in the set was at the top, Lainey Hill and Carlie Mitchell falling on an 8-2 final score.

The singles ran just as hot, Hill completing a perfect sweep of her no. 4 opponent 6-0, 6-0 to lead the second half of the match. Junior Trinh almost followed it up with another sweep at the no. 5 spot of the lineup, ending a great day competing with a 6-1, 6-0 final score. After winning the game-winning match on Sunday, senior Mamie Sevier continued the hot streak as Centre's no. 6 singles player with another win on her resume, finishing the match 6-2, 6-3. The Colonels final win of the night came in the fourth slot of the lineup, Williams prevailing in a first set of extras before pushing past a close set as well 7-6 (7-3), 7-5. Mitchell and Rueff had close set in their singles matches (no. 2 and no. 1, respectively), but falling in the second set 7-5, 6-2 for Mitchell and 7-5, 6-0 for Rueff.

The Colonels will get a stretch of rest before their next time they hit the courts, hosting Thomas Moore over the weekend. The first serves will kick off on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 12 p.m. ET.
