Men’s tennis sweeps Saturday matches

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre men's tennis team (2-4) kicked off their busy weekend with hosting both Hanover College and Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday, sweeping the two teams on a combined 16-2 score. The Colonels sparked the weekend on a dominant 9-0 win over Hanover, then later in the day earning the second win of the season against Hampden-Sydney on a 7-2 score.
 
Centre 9, Hanover 0
The Gold & White's sweep to start the weekend's matches featured Jasper Gazzo and Ben Rueff posting the largest margin of victory between the three series, their no. 2 match coming down on an 8-1 score. The no. 3 team of Faraz Ghamgosar and Jett Anderson weren't too far behind, their win reached an 8-2 final score in favor of Centre. The final series to conclude put the Colonels' no. 1 doubles team to two wins in a row, Ty Bush and Bo Bush serving a victory with an 8-5 final score.
 
Anderson posted the first singles victory in the match, the sophomore coming in the no. 2 spot of the lineup to earn a big second-half push of momentum in his 6-3, 6-1 win. Ty Bush would pick up his first win as Centre's no. 1 student-athlete in his 6-3, 6-4 victory, Chase Turley collecting his first collegiate singles win on a comeback 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 final score as the team's no. 3 spot of the lineup. In the second half of singles, the Gold & White would have a stronghold on the Panthers' ranks, posting 6-2, 6-1 wins or better in the final three matches. Gazzo led the way as the no. 4 with a 6-1, 6-1 win, Tanner Ray following suit in the no. 6 spot with his first win of the season for Centre. The final match score belonged to sophomore Emerson Dean, the Columbus, Ohio native serving up a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the no. 5 spot.
 
Centre 7, Hampden-Sydney 2
The Colonels achieved a second-consecutive match of sweeping doubles, Gazzo and Rueff kicking things off with an 8-2 victory in the team's no. 2 spot of the lineup. Ghamgosar and Turley would team together as the final doubles team in the lineup, mirroring the previously mentioned score to give Centre the advantage in the first round of the match. The Bush brothers would duel in a close, hard-fought battle, earning the win on a tight 8-7 (5) final score as the no. 1 team in the lineup.
 
Rueff was able to secure the most dominant singles score of the afternoon, the freshman earning the no. 3 win 6-1, 6-0 for a victory. Bo Bush would post a strong back half in his no. 2 singles match, winning 1-6, 6-3, 10-4 in the extra set match. Anderson would come back into the lineup as the the Colonels' no. 4, posting a strong 6-4, 6-3 win for his second-straight singles victory. Dean would solidify the Gold & White's final team point of the night, slotting a 6-1, 6-3 win in the no. 6 spot of the lineup. Ghamgosar would fall as the team's no. 1 match, battling a close first set 7-6 (9), 6-1. Ashton Whitt was the final match to conclude in the no. 5 of the lineup for Centre, falling on a final score of 6-3, 6-3.
 
UP NEXT
Centre will only have one match on Sunday, competing in an early 10 a.m. ET contest on Feb. 26 in the Seabury Family Tennis Center. The Colonels will take on Indiana University Southeast as before they prepare for a multi-match week in the next seven days.
