Centre baseball splits Sunday doubleheader

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball hosted both Penn State Behrend and Dominican for the second time in as many days to wrap up their weekend tournament. The Colonels topped the Lions 2-1 in a pitchers' duel before losing 10-8 to the Stars in a shootout.

Game 1: Centre 2, PSB 1

- The opening innings featured all zeroes as Centre's Josh Livengood struck out five of the first ten batters he faced. The Lions got on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single, but Livengood pitched his way out of trouble and the deficit stayed at 1-0.
- After failing to cash in with runners in scoring position in each of the previous three innings, Centre finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh. Aaron Lopez lined a double into the gap and was driven in by Josh Cunningham, who doubled into the left field gap on the first pitch he saw and then advanced to third on a misplay in the outfield. Karson Thompson lifted a sac fly deep enough into right field to bring in Cunningham for the go-ahead run.
- Zach Heavern, who relieved Livengood in the sixth, stayed on to finish the game as he got the heart of the PSB lineup to go down in order in the ninth to secure the win.

Game 2: Dominican 10, Centre 8

- The Colonels struck first in their first time at bat. Cunningham walked on four pitches to lead off and later scored on a base hit up the middle by Will Cline. Dominican errors on the next two trips allowed Cline and Teddy Holloway to score, giving Centre a 3-0 lead.
- In the second, Jamie Laframboise reached on an error to lead off. Perry Nadreau followed with a base hit and then Cunningham ripped a double into the gap to make it 4-0. With runners on second and third, Thompson sent everybody home with a three-run blast over the big wall in left field and Centre took a 7-0 lead.
- The Stars battled back in a big way, scoring two in the third, three in the fourth and five in the seventh to take the lead at 10-7.
- Centre got one back in the eighth as Laframboise legged out a bunt single to lead off and later scored when Cunningham lined a base hit up the middle.
- Ben Prather smacked a double off the right field fence to lead off the ninth and bring the tying run to the plate, but the Colonels went down in order after that to end the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES

- The Centre pitchers were fantastic in game 1 as Livengood and Heavern combined for 11 strikeouts and allowed just four hits on the day. Heavern picked up his first collegiate win.
- Cunningham was the only Centre player with multiple hits in game 1, leading off with a base hit in the first and driving in the tying run in the seventh.
- Thompson went 3-5 in game 2 and finished a double shy of the cycle.
