DANVILLE, Ky.– Fresh off their trip from Texas, the Centre men's tennis team (5-8) finished their spring break season on Saturday with an afternoon match against Midway. The Colonels were able to snag a victory off the wins of their underclassmen on the roster, winning with a final score of 5-4 at the contest's conclusion.
The Eagles would get ahead of the Gold & White early, Centre only claiming one point in the first half of the match from
Ashton Whitt and
Jasper Gazzo's win in the no. 3 series 8-3.
Ty Bush and
Bo Bush came close to earning a second point for the Colonels but would fall in the tiebreaker in the no. 2 series 8-7 (4). The final series in the three-set portion of the contest was in the no. 2 spot of the lineup,
Ben Rueff and
Faraz Ghamgosar falling 8-6 in the match.
The Gold & White would push to victory by claiming wins in four of the six singles matches, three of those four wins mentioned stemming from freshman student-athletes on the roster. Among those freshmen was
Ty Bush at the no. 2 slot of the lineup, pushing a dominant second-set win after a tight first one 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Ben Rueff staved off a comeback from his opponent in the 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win, holding strong in the no. 3 singles slot to earn a third point for Centre.
Jett Anderson would come into the series with a chance for another Colonel point in the no. 5 position, doing just that in a consistent 6-4, 6-4 score. Ghamgosar (6-4, 2-6, 7-5) and Whitt (6-3, 6-2) would fall in the no. 1 and no. 4 spots of the lineup, respectively.
With the team scores tied at four points each, the no. 6's result would determine the outcome of the contest. Freshman
Chase Turley would represent the Gold & White in the match, his third appearance of the season rounding out Centre's singles lineup. The League City, Texas native would fall behind early with a 6-3 loss in the first set, but would immediately follow through with a strong 6-3 win in the second set to force a third round between the two student-athletes. In the final set, Turley would run the show with a 6-3 win to finalize Centre's fifth team win of the season.
The Gold & White will be back in action next weekend for conference play, hosting two SAA programs over the two days. They'll first face off against the Hendrix Warriors on Saturday, April 1, competing with an 11 a.m. ET start time.
